Wow. Here I am again. 2010, New Year's Day. How was last year? Hmm. Well, unlike the year before which was pretty much on an incline upwards (though considering the year before, anything was better), this year was a year of extremes - of victories and tribulations aplenty. Firstly, I finished the book. For those of you not paying attention, I was tapped by an outfit called Mindstorm Labs to write a massive compendium of weapons, gear and augmentations. And this year, in the last week of May, I finished it. By the time it was done it was over 200 000 words - some of my friends in Academe tell me that is on the order of some masters theses out there. It certainly felt that way. I called it the Abel Report (can't tell you why) and sent it in to the boys at Mindstorm Labs. I don't know when they will use it, but I am certain they will. I am proud of that work. Very proud. It truly represents a milestone for me. I also started up the first RPG I had run in over a year and oh boy did it ever feel good to do THAT again! I found a great group and we have been playing since early August every two weeks. The game itself is wonderful and it's good to be able to run something other than the steady diet of 4th Ed D+D that seems to be everywhere these days. On an interpersonal front, I have made some special new friends and (for a change) not really lost anyone, though some friendships have attenuated over the course of the year. I am hoping to strengthen them somewhat in the days to come. One serious drawback to this year has been my health. In late May my leg acted up - massively...more than it has EVER done before. It took nearly three weeks to get it under control in the first flare-up and the subsequent weekly and bi-weekly flare-ups were really scary because they basically lasted not only through the summer but right into late fall as well. The last instance was Halloween night. So far, there has been nothing since. I am beginning to think these things are some sort of bacterial infestation fostered by the warm weather and I just can't shake it until the cold kills all the bugs. God I hope it doesn't come back next year - that would be scary as hell, not to mention a pain in the ass. So...all in all, the year was a mixed bag - mostly good, but not as much as I perhaps would have liked. Let's see what 2010 has in store. Brace yourself. Happy New Year my friends. what a fucked up, horrible year. I gotta get a job in 2010. happy new year fellow babies.
plus.... New Prints AvailableI've added several previously unavailable prints to my shop. Enjoy!

10 years ago, my life was going through massive upheaval. One of the wonderful things about archiving my old 'Newsletter' e-mails through Livejournal is that I don't have to guess what was happening. It's all right there. Christmas 1999 and then New Years 2000... all of it. Ten years ago today I had just moved back to Calgary to start teaching Animation courses full time at AMTC, not knowing where that would lead. Over the next ten years I'd move from Calgary to Halifax, have 3 major job shake-ups and 3 major relationships, then come out the other side with new love, a home, and two incredible careers. Highs and lows wrapping up with a rock solid base of happiness and security I could never have imagined. It's brain boggling and wonderful. Stacy and I have been together for 3 years come late January. We're engaged and looking forward to the future together. Having this kind of love in my life is so precious to me. I've been at UDON for 6 and a half years and Seneca for 6 years. Both jobs are moving along well and have found an unexpected equilibrium with each other. I don't know exactly where they'll lead but I have confidence about the industry I'm in and what my contributions are. The house has become a social spot and a sanctum, a place where we can entertain our friends or just steal ourselves away for private time. It's accessible to downtown but not crammed into the hustle and bustle of it all. Tidying up for some New Year's festivities tonight, I'm still a bit in awe that this is our home, even though I've been living here for just over 2 years. This decade was easily the most eventful slice of my life so far. Thank you for being a part of it. The future looks bright. Happy New Year everyone.

PDX People: I will be in your fair city from January 7th - January 10th. Please let me know if you want to see my cute face.

December 30, raining, happy. Just popping in to quickly mention that I am, indeed, alive but won’t be back until about a week into the next year. I’ve been tasked with a new project that’s taking up, literally, all my time. However, I do dig the new year’s eve symbolism and plan to greet 2010 with a small group of friends, watching movies, drinking champagne, eating fondue, and being fahbulous. How about you?
And so I don’t leave empty-handed: pictures from wandering on Grand Avenue after a visit to MOCA’s First Thirty Years exhibit. To me, these capture the Los Angeles winter mood fairly well.

And a bunch from a visit to mine and Ales’ friend, Matt Levin. Matt is an artist and you should check out his stuff here. He has prints for sale here – I have one and it’s pretty damn epic. One of Matt’s sculptures:

And now I go, leaving you with the photos after the jump.

I hope you all had a merry Christmas (or happy holidays, Festivus, etc) & also have a great new year! We spent ours with Heiko's family, and it was lovely. I have nooo photos whatsoever from Christmas (forgot the camera) & since then I've had the flu. But I hope it goes away before New Years. Here is some Glücksklee that I found in the supermarket. Didn't know that you could BUY four leaf clovers. Seems a bit like cheating, but it is neat. Also, Heiko got me some sets to finish my Moomin collection. :)

Oh my, look at this gorgeous layout. FromP:
